Unforgettable Safari: Big Five in the Serengeti

There are few experiences on earth that match the raw, primal thrill of watching a lion pride emerge from the golden grass at sunrise over the Serengeti. Tanzania's most celebrated national park spans over 14,763 square kilometres of savanna, woodland and riverine forest — home to the world's most spectacular wildlife concentrations and the greatest mammal migration on the planet.

The Great Migration: Nature's Greatest Spectacle

Between July and October, over 1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 zebra and 350,000 Thomson's gazelle thunder north across the Serengeti in search of fresh grazing — crossing crocodile-filled rivers at Grumeti and Mara in a breathtaking display of instinct and survival. Timing your safari to coincide with the river crossings is an experience that stays with you for life.

Africa changes you. The Serengeti doesn't just give you wildlife — it gives you perspective, silence and the humbling reminder that we are guests in a world that was here long before us.

Tracking the Big Five

The Serengeti's Seronera Valley is arguably the best place on earth for leopard sightings — these elusive cats are frequently spotted draped in fever trees at dawn. Lion prides roam the central plains in large family groups, while massive elephant herds march through the woodland fringes. Buffalo graze in vast dark herds, and black rhino can sometimes be spotted near Moru Kopjes.

Wildlife Photography Tips

Bring a telephoto lens of at least 400mm for the best results. Shoot during the golden hour — the 90 minutes after sunrise and before sunset — for the warmest light and most active wildlife. Ask your Monnas Travel guide to position the vehicle for optimal angles. Be patient: the best sightings come to those who wait quietly.

Best Time to Visit the Serengeti

The Serengeti offers excellent game viewing year-round. The dry season (June–October) concentrates wildlife around water sources and delivers the spectacular Great Migration river crossings. The green season (November–May) brings lush scenery, fewer crowds, competitive pricing and excellent big cat activity — particularly cheetah hunts on the open plains.
